Microsoft AutoUpdate allows you to keep your software up-to-date automatically. AutoUpdate comes with Office, so there's nothing additional to install, and you can also use it to manually check for new downloads as well. Customers who use Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) to keep their Office applications up-to-date will see a "regular" monthly update notification when their selected channel is upgraded to 64-bit builds. Depending on which version is installed on the local computer, MAU will offer either a delta or full update. The update package size does not change between 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Also, MAU can deliver a delta update when applicable to update a user from 32-bit to 64-bit applications. Therefore, customers won't experience a sharp increase in download activity. For the release to the Production channel, customers will see "(64-bit)" in the update title to make them aware that this is a 64-bit update.

Volume License customers typically get their Office 2016 software from the Volume License Service Center (VLSC). These builds are refreshed infrequently and are typically aligned with new language editions. The VLSC will continue to offer 32-bit installers (15.23) until November 2016. However, all updater packages that are released after August will be based on 64-bit builds. Therefore, a VLSC customer who updates either manually or through AutoUpdate will be transitioned to 64-bit builds.
There may be situations in which the customer has to change code that's not 64-bit ready. If customers can't immediately move forward to 64-bit builds, we will make available a one-time 32-bit update for the 15.25 release in addition to the default 64-bit updates. The 32-bit updates will be available only for manual download from the Office CDN.

You can keep your Office products open so that once an update is downloaded from MAU, it will pause and tell you to close your apps. That way you'll have time to copy the update package to a new location before it gets installed and deleted.

The version numbering scheme includes a number for the installation framework, followed by the version number for the product binaries in parentheses. The product binaries contain business logic that can be updated more often than the installation framework. Product binaries are hosted by the installation framework that precedes the product binaries version. Therefore, the product binaries version number will be the same or newer than that framework version number. Product binaries can also be updated automatically without reinstalling Drafting Assistant.
Additionally, Microsoft AutoUpdate can cause other issues that warrant disabling it. For example, it can interrupt you by requesting you to shut down apps during updates or fail during downloads when switching networks. It can also use up valuable resources and impede operating system performance.
The tool has automatic detection for Office 2016, 2019, and 2021 generations - which also includes Office 365 support. The tool understands both CDN and Mac App Store-based installs. If the tool detects that the Mac is running an ancient build such as 16.9, it will automatically update it to the latest 16.16 build, which is of the same 2016 generation. Alternatively, a Mac running Office 16.24 will be updatedto the latest modern generation build. in other words, the tool won't invalidate a license by downloading the wrong Office generation.
The scripts use nscurl to download the packages from the Microsoft CDN (via officecdnmac.microsoft.com). If the network setup doesn't allow the machine to access the CDN, a warning will be logged in /var/log/install.log and thetool will proceed to the next command. Downloaded update packages are stored in /Users/Shared/OnDemandInstaller. To prevent tampering, the scripts verify that the downloaded PKGs are wholesome through two mechanisms 1) exact byte size match between what the CDN advertises versus the file on disk 2) the package is signed with the official Microsoft developer certificate.
Outlook will automatically download updates only unless the size of the changes is larger than 12.5% (one-eighth) of the total OAB size. In that case the whole OAB is being downloaded again. In a later section, it is explained how to modify this.
The only thing that you can control with this option is selecting which OAB to download; In the rare case that multiple has been assigned to you. In that case, Outlook automatically picks the one that contains the most addresses.
As the OAB can be quite large in some environments, it could be wise to be prompted when Outlook wants to download the full OAB. This allows you to abort the update process when you are for instance on a slow or expensive connection.
